Holiday Happenings in Providence

2011 has been a BIG year at the Providence Marriott Downtown. We reinvented our lobby this summer – now called the Greatroom. We celebrated the sunshine out at AQUA with some awesome live music and fun activities like free salsa lessons. The Providence Marriott now offers FREE wireless throughout the common areas and in our guest rooms. We bought a spanking new shuttle to take our guests to all the cool places in Providence. We also supported Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Research Foundation in October by offering a Pink Package all month and at the Bluefin Grille by offering pink desserts and cocktails – Make it & Shake it was pink too! What’s Going On in Providence This Weekend?

ZooARTyssey – An Odyssey through Living Art on Mid-Summer Evenings ~ Enjoy an unforgettable experience as you journey through the Zoo on a summer evening during the magical sunset hours. On your way you’ll discover enchanting and engaging living art characters created by Rhode Island’s renowned performance artists, TEN31 Productions. Friday, August 12 6-8:30 PM. You’ll enjoy the living art as well as all the animals on exhibit, along with live music. Delicious food and an array of beverages including beer and wine will also be available for purchase. A unique, all ages appropriate event!

This Saturday, you could become the first person in history to walk the Independence Trail Line in Providence. During the ribbon cutting ceremony and inaugural walk, the last 375 inches of the trail will be painted, ensuring that no one has walked the complete three-mile trail prior to Saturday at 10 a.m. The public is welcome to sign up to walk any time between 10 a.m. and midnight. Registration to take the walking tour of 75 historic sites through downtown Providence begins at 9 a.m., with one registrant chosen to be the first to walk the line.

When: Aug. 13, 9 a.m. registration, 10 a.m. ceremony and start of tour.

AS220 takes over Empire Street this Saturday (1 PM – 1 AM) to present Foo Fest, the organization’s signature annual event. Now in its 17th year, Foo Fest transforms the street into and outdoor gallery and performance space. This year’s lineup includes Andrew W.K. and Cherie Lily, as well as the AS220 Criss Cross Orchestra and 19 other local acts. Foo Fest will also feature demonstrations and activities from AS220, Anarchist Book Fair, Umberto Crenca’s Artist in a Box, Kidoinfo, Providence Children’s Museum, Jackie Frole’s 12-foot Mancala board and more.

WaterFire will fuel a night of fun with Bananagrams Bananaganza, co-sponsored with Bananagrams and Fidelity Investments. Head to RISD Market Square to enjoy a free game-playing area featuring the Bananagrams word puzzle games, Roba Dolce gelato, live music and special prizes. Saturday will also include a torch procession, student music and poetry performances and informational displays in a salute to Rhode Island teachers and educators. Add some extra spice to the night with free salsa dance lessons from 7 to 8 p.m. at the TD Bank Ballroom (Turks Head Plaza). www.waterfire.org
